Exam Review

For Questions #1 to #6, choose the letter representing the term that best matches each statement. Each letter maybe used more that once, or not at all.

1) H) A die is tossed 5 times and a six shows up twice giving a probability of 2/5
2) C) These are the successful result in a probability experiment
3) D) Tossing a coin and spinning a spinner at the same are examples of.....
4) A) These are all the possible results in a probability experimental
5) G) when tossing a coin, head is expected to have a probability of 1/2
6) F) In a lottery, every outcome has an equal chance of occurring

A)outcomes
B)probability
C)favorable outcomes
D)independent events
E)samples space
F)random
G)theoretical probability
H)experimental probability

For #7 to #10 select the best answer.

7) A basket contains 4 yellow, 3 red, and 3 blue slips of paper. Without looking, Navida reaches in to pull one slip. What is the probability that is it red?

A) 3/4 B) 3/5 C) 3/7 D) 3/10

8) Which of the following gives the correct way to calculate the probability of an event?

A) probability =number of favorable events/all possible events
B) probability = all possible events/ number of favorable events
C) probability = number of favorable events/independent events
D) probability = theoretical events/experimental events

9) The probability of an accident occurring is P(accident)=0.28. What is the probability that an accident does not occur?

A) 0.14 B) 0.56 C) 0.28 D) 0.72

10) A student rolls a six-sided die three times in row. The first roll results in a 6 and the second roll will result in a 6. What is the probability that the third roll will results in a 6?

A) 1/6 B) 1/3 C) 2/6 D) 2/3

For #11 to #15, use a separate piece of paper.

11) Jorge tosses a coin and rolls a four-sided die. Draw a tree diagram to show the sample space.

12) What is the probability of randomly choosing a grey ball from the box? Show your answer as a fraction and a percent.

13) If you pick one letter at random from the word POSSIBILITIES what is the chance that it will be a vowel? Show your answer as a fraction and percent.

P(vowel)=6/13=46%

14) Kirsten has spinner and 4 balls as shown below. She spins the spinner and selects one ball at random.

A) Use a table to show all of the possible outcomes.

B) How many outcomes will result in Q and an even numbered ball?
12=1/6=16% or 17%

C) What is P(Q, even numbered ball) as a decimal and a percent?
P(Q, even numbered ball=2/12=1/6=0.16 or 0.17=16% or 17%

15) Dominic and Tony are playing a board game with a pair of six-sided dice. If Dominic can roll total of five using the two dice, he will win the game.

A) What are the possible sums Dominic can roll using the pair of dice?

Integers April 13th, 2010

ID the pattern write a chart, create algebraic equation.

The pattern on the right adds four all the time.
The pattern on the left adds one all the time.
To find how much sticks it takes to make one
house , you how to multiple by 4 and add 1
eg.

1x4=4 2x4=8 3x4=12
4+1=5 8+1=9 12+1=13
5=5 9=9 13=13

How many sticks does it take to make 211 houses?

211 211x4=844
200x4=800 844+1=845
11x4=44 845=845
800+44=844

Integers Cont.

zero pair-a pair of integer chips with one chip representing +1 and one chip representing -1
eg.

Opposite integers - two integers with same numeral but different signs (+,-)
eg.

Show using chips:

Probability - is the likelihood or chance of an event occurring.
Probability = Favorable outcomes/possible outcomes
eg. flipping a coin - probability 50% because there's two sides

Probability - can be expressed as a ratio, fraction or percent
eg. rolling dice - you have 1/6 chances of getting any number on the die

Outcome - one possible result of a probability experiment
- what might happen

Favorable Outcome - a successful result in a probability experiment
- what we want to happen
